"I do not support same sex marriage." ~ John Edwards, 2008 US presidential candidate
I'm behind in my politics. I understand that. However, I finally saw clips from the democratic debate on Logo. And in response to the question about same sex marriages, Edwards was decisive, clear and respectful. There was no waffling. There was no politicking. He was everything I have come to respect and expect from him. And I do love that about the man.
Except...what he said. I cannot support what he said. Looks like the other shoe has finally dropped.
Damn.
Those are Pobble Thoughts. That and a buck fifty will get you coffee.

What is the f*'ing PROBLEM!!??
I just don't understand what the big deal is with this issue!
Human beings SHOULD have a right to love and publicly announce their love to whom ever they choose, WHY is this so difficult? Isn't it in the constitution somewhere? Something about the right pursue happiness?
BAH!!
(sorry 'bout the 'almost swear word', but the topic gets me riled!)
The problem I'm having is that I don't think the "perfect candidate" exists - one who supports everything I find importand and rallies against the things which I find to be horrific. Unfortunately, I think it will come down to voting for the person who has more pluses than minuses. I haven't made a decision yet, but if I had to choose between, say, Edwards and Romney, the choice would be a clear one for me...Edwards.
How sad is it that we have to choose from among the lesser of all evils to run our nation? Ugh.
I'm a Christian. I support same sex marriage.
I will be suprised if we see it legalized before I'm dead.
Tai ~ I wish (oh, how I wish!) I had an answer for you. However, I don't understand what the big deal is either. Apparently, the right of the pursuit of happiness doesn't extend to marriage rights. *sigh*
Jaded ~ I agree completely. So much so that you said it best and I will leave it at that.
Krystal ~ Christian doesn't equal closed-minded. Thanks for the reminder. I'm afraid you are probably right about the timeline.
If Edwards is like all the other politicians in the universe, he'll do the opposite of what he says now anyway. They're all wolves in sheeps' clothing. Vote for Cthulu, at least he's honest about being the ultimate evil. You'll know what you're getting.
i keep praying it will happen in my lifetime and who knows... maybe it will. especially if politicians continue to see that it is an important issue.
and the same happened to me about edwards.
GOML! ~ That is a school of thought: vote for the definite evil and don't be surprised. lol
Lovely Cats ~ *sigh*
Traci ~ Yep, I know the feeling. *sigh*
And a general note to everyone: Feel free to spell out whatever words you choose/feel like using. 'Cause I don't give a fuck. :)
I suppose it's a good thing that a politician is being straightforward with his opinions. Saves you the trouble of voting for him and then having to feel resentful later because your one precious vote was cast for someone with narrow-minded opinions that ruin people's lives.
Sigh. Of course, there's precious few people to vote for after you truly know their opinions.
Spider Girl ~ Yes, it is always better to know the stance of the pol. I just wish this particular pol had a different stance. *sigh*
As you noted, you have to admire the not waffling, pandering, etc. and simply stating his opinion on the topic.
Now that opinion itself is another topic entirely.
I would rather see myself as more practical than senical but in this race it's difficult to see the person and what they believe as the deciding factor.
These canidates owe their alliegence to their supporters. While I must vote for the the lesser of two evils and am not ready to vote republican,I know where Edwards gets his finacial support and they cannot afford for him to speak anything that goes against their agenda. If Edwards wants to stay in the race, he cannot afford to say anything other than what his finacial supporters demand of him.
I won't be voting for him.
SS ~ Exactly. And nice use of "pandering" ;)
Ed ~ Welcome to Pobble Thoughts. The follow-the-money issue always seems to be at the heart of politics, doesn't it. *sigh*
Understand my bias. I live in what was John Edward's town and share at least elements of a profession with him.
Having acknowledged what some may believe to be my prejudices, I would point out two things. Legally, "marriage" between any two people is not a matter of Federal law so long as there is no Constitutional provision explicitly prohibiting it. And Edwards did NOT say "I support a Constitutional Amendment forbidding same sex marriage" as some of the present crop of candidates have done. Consider the total package presented by your prospective candidate, and pick someone to suport accordingly.
Appsrus ~ Yes, I do see the big picture and do not mean to imply that I cannot vote for him. However, I have been so impressed with him that for him to come out that clearly was a HUGE disappointment.
Gah! The endless bickering over the "evils" of same sex marriage is such a ridiculous, tiny, wee little distraction! Let people love each other, let people show their love and respect for each other, let people be happy and content and free to make their own choice!
WHAT'S THE FREAKIN' PROBLEM WITH THAT?!?!?!
(I'm not shouting at you, Pobble, but in a general, southward direction.... and I feel queasy about using naughty words in comments, but I appreciate your allowance of such utterances!)
Kimber, I can agree with everything you said except for your shouting in a southern direction. Homophobia is not regional,in my observation.
Wolfgrrrl ~ I knew you weren't shouting at me, per se. No worries. ;)
Appsrus ~ What you don't realize is Wolfgrrrl is Canadian, therefore anything dealing with US politics from her At All ~ good, bad or indifferent ~ is directed in a southward direction.
That was why he didn't get my support.
I hate these choices.
Thank you, Pobble, for clearing up that geographical misunderstanding. Apprus, you are correct --homophobia is regrettably not regional, but US politics are.
the thing is each of the candidates have biases and prejudices, everyone does. The thing is if elected will he try to take away people freedom to marry who they want. You can have biases but it is how you act on those baises is what I'm most worried about. I bet almost all the candidates are opposed to same sex marriages but won't say it because they don't want to ruffle feathers. At least Edwards has the gut to say it out loud.
CrackerLilo ~ And thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn this about him on my own instead of lambasting me earlier when I talked about agreeing with everything he had said so far. (Not that *you* would lambaste me ~ let's just say I appreciate it and leave it at that.) {{{hugs}}}
Kimber ~ Any time.
Rose ~ You're right; I *do* respect him HUGELY for coming right out and saying it. It was a dicey situation and I give the man kudos for not politicking the answer but speaking plainly.
I found you from GOML. On this issue, they (meaning all the dems) say the same thing. They do not 'support gay marriage' but want to leave it up to the states. It is a total cop out. Hilary and Obama said the same thing he said. This way they appeal to everyone. Politics sucks. I do believe times have changed and the right wing are becoming so right (and very wrong) that they will alienate themselves. Once , just about 4 years ago, we had Kerry trying to win the moderate vote. Now the GOP is trying to do it by not seeming so right. But alas, I think gay rights are a subject that is ridiculous because no man, or woman, has cajones to really stand up for them. It is also so ridiculous since these are basic human rights. there, i said my peace. i am just tired of the rhetoric these politicians use to basically try and please everyone.
on that note...great blog. I am from the Northeast and miss it very much. stay warm and merry xmas!!
