Here's a cool idea: people are turning off their lights tonight (March 29th) from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time. One hour. That's all.
According to a Yahoo Green! article by Trystan L. Bass, What difference can an hour make? You'd be surprised -- when 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses in Sydney, Australia, all turned off their lights for an hour in 2007, they reduced energy use by 10.2% that day. That's equivalent to taking 48,000 cars off the road.
Well...cool. I can do this. And maybe you can too. At least think about it. Because candlelight is both romantic, for those of you in partnerships, and peaceful, for those of you alone tonight. Neither of those things suck.
Those are Pobble Thoughts. That and a buck fifty will get you coffee.

Good. I get to be the first comment to post, having been so absent from the last week and a half's worth that I didn't even know they'd come and gone! So I'll just blanket them and say, "Oh, dear Pobble! What great posts! I wholeheartedly concur / support you / think you're awesome!" There. As for this one, all I can say is, cool. All the e-mails that go around about not buying gas or boycotting a particular oil company or Big Store Conglomerate or whatever, never seem to actually make a difference. Maybe this will, and you can count your favorite murder of Crows in on it! Love you!
Between 8 and 9 pm tonight, this entire town will be parading down the main street with paper lanterns, going to the Village Square to watch fire dancers and fire jugglers. I can think of no better reason to turn out the lights.
Okay, I CAN think of a better reason, but not one that's so family-friendly and involves all the neighbours.
What a great idea! Too bad I just stepped on Jasper while walking through a dark room. :-/ For future reference: candles are portable.
This is going to be a big deal in Europe, where it has made all the newspapers. And I suspect will be widely observed.
Crow ~ The thing about not buying gas on this day or that day is that the gas will eventually be purchased. People will either fill up the day before or the day after and the sales will reflect that. The odds, however, of people leaving their lights on an extra hour because they had them off for an hour are much slimmer.
Wolfgrrrl ~ Oh, I hope it was lovely! And I hope you will be posting on it (but that's totally selfish.)
Nemeria ~ Ooops! Yes. Candles do indeed travel from room to room. At least you'll know for next year.
Appsrus ~ There were several apartments here in our area ~ as well as pretty major businesses that were dark. I was very pleased because I wasn't sure about this area.
