Sunday Poll Question

It's been a little intense and a lot thinky around Pobble Thoughts this past week. Both in good ways and yet undeniably true. So, I figured we'd take a break from the thinky, even with the Poll Question, and just have a little fun.

Question ~ Who is your obscure crush? Now, I don't mean the obvious ones like Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie. I don't even mean the ones that are obscure until you mention them and then the majority of people respond with "Oh yeah! I'd forgotten about her/him." Chris Meloni and Mariska Hartigay come to mind in this category. No, I mean the ones that, even once you tell their names, most people respond with "...Really?...Oh...Hm..."

Pobble Answer ~ The easiest one for me would be my number one celebrity crush of all time, Brian Dennehy. But everyone knows about my crush on him so it isn't really fair for me to use him as an answer today. Instead, I will tell you about my most obscure crush. Which is not easy because most of my crushes are obscure (with a few exceptions such as the above mentioned Hartigay and Meloni ~ my God but they're magnificent!) I like people such as William H. Macy and Alan Alda and, of course, the Rush Crush I've got on Geoffery Rush. But my number one obscure crush? He's not going to make it into a top ten list ~ unless it's of obscure crushes. At which point, he's first:

Tim Russert

The man is intelligent (wicked intelligent), has a great smile, integrity and wears a suit well. Yep. I got a crush on Tim Russert.

Your answer ~ Don't leave me hanging here...

Those are Pobble Thoughts. That and a buck fifty will get you coffee.

Please forgive my verbosity. This is from an old post about the guy who works in my neighbors machine shop across the way:

"When he talks he sounds like he's being strangled, or he's choking on a potato chip. He has a long, flat-ish face with big ears and thinks carefully about his answer when you ask him a question.

The other day, as I was walking the hounds around the vacant house next door, Joe pulled up in his truck. He just wanted to see who was up at the house, he said. He got out of his truck, squatted down and scratched my shepherd mix behind her ears. As we chatted about car stuff, I looked at this man and I was moved. He looked up at me, utterly relaxed, with his pale, pale blue eyes. His face was smudged with grease, as were his work clothes. This gentle, kind and often overlooked man sat before me, and I thought he was beautiful."

Instead of going through a list of my favorite actresses, here's a good example.

OK, this one will make sense to firefly fans...

Inara & River may be drop-dead beautiful, but I'm a Kaylee kinda guy. Jewel Staite in real life.

Yes, give me simple "down-home" beauty, with brains, a sense of humor & just a touch of naive wonderment. zounds...sounds just like my wife. ;-)

Jaded got one of mine before I could get it out. Dr. Drew. Probably not so obscure anymore, as he's a media whore lately.

Jack White. White Stripes. Makes me very wiggly. But I don't think that counts as obscure either.

I have to second Alton Brown. And add Adam Arkin, Seth Meyer, Fred Armisen and David Boreanaz.

To Irns - Would that make you a Winifred "Fred" Burkle kind of guy, too? I have a girl crush going on Amy Acker.

D-Man ~ Verbosity is ALWAYS welcome around here (have you seen the length of some of my posts?) And yes, sounds like the kind of obscure crush I'm talking about.

Lovely Cats ~ Hm. I gotta tell you; I think Hugh Laurie falls into the Meloni category: just plain hot once you remember him! Yum.

Lrns ~ Yes, I can see that. Although Gina Torres was always the one I found most attractive on that show. (although it was just a drop dead gorgeous cast, in my opinion)

Jaded ~ Goldblum is Very High on my obscure list. In Independence Day when he and Will Smith are walking away from the crash site... I know you know!

Zooom ~ Dr. Drew, very hot. Jack White - obscure in the way I meant it. Not unknown but makes people say "hm...really? him?"

BostonPobble said...

Nemeria ~ We crossed in cyberspace. Alan Arkin...nice one!

LRNs said...

Nemeria - Fred?...not so much. I know they (& Willow) all fit a Joss Whedon archetype, but it's not the same.

Nemeria said...

Pobble - Not Alan Arkin but his son ADAM Arkin. And if you really want obscure, I had it wicked bad for Randolph Mantooth when I was a youngin.

There are a few older ladies I still crush on. Helen Mirren was stunning at the Oscars. I've always liked her. And as much as a young Sophia Loren is a no-brainer, I think she's still hot. That's not really obscure but reveals my fetish for golden agers.

Jaded said...

Wow, of the 3 heterosexual men I mentioned, each is also considered a hottie by people who post here. I guess that shouldn't come as any great surprise because we come here for a reason, right?

But Jeff Goldblum has been at the top of my list for years. It's that quirky thing that I find unbelievably sexy, which is probably why Alton Brown is on there too.

But, yes, the scene you mentioned... oh. my. god.

A little over a year ago I would have answered this question easily, it would have been Brit. Recently, I'm not sure. That took a little more thought. The organist at church. Yeah. Have no idea why. Don't want to think to much about it...

I go ga-ga over Drew Carey.

I would have to say Mimi Rogers is about as obscure as I can think of for me. If I can come up with someone better I shall let you know.

But someone brought up Amy Acker and I would be remiss not to say that I was a HUGE "Fred" fan.

Tim Russert, eh? Definitely an interesting choice, but I understand yr. logic here.

I'll go with Raquel Welch. There's something about those infomercials or maybe it was a gym commerical that I saw as a kid which puts her on the list.

So many....

John Malcovich - Actor
Simon Winchester - Author
Jean Reno - Actor

ummmm, that's about all I can think of so far!

I was sen here via Google alert because the name Brian Dennehy popped up!
I have had a crush on this man for over 30 years. My husband, son and daughter have always referred to hi as "Mom's Boyfriend". So, it was with a delight that I read your post today.
I also loved reading through many of your recent posts. Great space!

I also adore Gary Sinise, Chris Cooper...and I can totally understand Tim Russert. : )

Have a great week.

Sue

I have a crush on Eddie Izzard...

Lrns ~ Okay, apparently, I have to start watching more Joss Wheadon. I have no clue who Fred even is. ;)

Nemeria ~ My bad. And yes, ADAM is indeed a hottie. Randolph Mantooth, huh? Wouldn't have pegged you for a Mantooth gal. I do love learning new things about people I've known forever.

GOML! ~ Helen Mirren is amazing. Please, Goddess, I look half as good! And I, too, tend to find people more attractive as they age so at least you're not alone. ;)

Jaded ~ Back in the early-80s, Goldblum did a short-lived series with Sydney Poirtier (sp?) called "(Someone) and Brownshoe." Goldblum played Brownshoe. Even then, my prepubescent self called him "Fineshoe" ... 'cause the man was Fiiiiine. I understand, my friend.

Graziella ~ It is sometimes best not to think too hard about why we have crushes and simply enjoy them instead!

GNGirl ~ Really????? Wow. Hm. Yeah, that fits the request of this question PERFECTLY!

Cam Pike ~ As I said to GNG...Really? Interesting. I wouldn't have pictured you a Mimi Rogers type o'guy.

$$ ~ As I said to the Lovely Cats, she's just hot!

Tai ~ I admit, I don't know Simon Winchester but I am So Right There with you on Malkovich and Reno. Growing up, my friends thought I was nuts for liking Malkovich and no one understood why I went to see Mission Impossible and didn't pay a lick of attention to Tom Cruise! Definitely "hmm...really?" choices!

Susie Q ~ Welcome to Pobble Thoughts! You are a woman with great taste and style, I can tell. So few people understand the lust-inducing qualities of Brian... *dreamy sigh* AND you get the Tim Russert thing. :) Stop by any time.

Dreamer ~ We crossed in cyberspace! While I don't share it, I can see it. ;)

Obscure crush -- is there any other kind? I shall list three:

~ Monica Bellucci
~ Albert Finney
~ Jon Erik Hexum

Yum.

BostonPobble said...

Wolfgrrrl ~ Albert Finney...I have never thought of him in this way. Perhaps I need to take another look...

I'm thinking here- this is too hard. I'll come back.

Crow Mother said...

Dear Pobble, I must correct you. Jeff Goldblum did not star with Poitier, but with Ben Vereen. But, ah yes, that happens to be where I picked up my crush on Goldblum, too, but I wasn't going to list him, as he's not remotely obscure in my book. Kathleen Turner doesn't count as obscure, either, but I kept her Playboy centerfold on my bulletin board for years!! I adore Alton Brown, and Tim Robbins (any Sesame Street fan will know him as "Robbins Tim Robbins") none of these particularly obscure. So... my really obscure crush, so much so that no amount of internet searching could give me his name, is the white-haired Asian scientist (either a physist or cosmologist) who appears on any number of Discovery or History channel specials. I'll keep looking and update when I figure out his name! (Ok, also Laurie Anderson, Rita Moreno and CCH Pounder)

Crow Mother said...

...and it was called Tenspeed and Brown Shoe! ;) ~Crow

BostonPobble said...

Rose ~ I look forward to your answer!

Crow Mother ~ Robbins Time Robbins! Absolutely! As for Tenspeed and Brown Shoe (!!!!), it was Vereen, huh? I will defer to you. ;)

Sam Elliot (his voice can make me melt), Willem DaFoe, I can get behind House too... most current hottie- Clive Owen!

CrackerLilo said...

You already know these, but since Sinead O'Connor's last huge hit (though by no means her beautiful voice and adventurous music) was over 15 years ago, she's pretty obscure now. Especially to younger people. You have to be in just the right demographic to know that one, I think.

And Tony Stewart is obscure to most New Yorkers, because they're not into NASCAR. He's becoming less obscure now, however. I liked him long before other women (and some men, too!) got a good look at his soulful brown eyes and wicked grin.

I love you, Daddy Warbucks!

I can't tell you exactly what it is about Albert Finney, but I adore watching him act, and I love his voice. It makes me melt.

And yes, Goldblum. Sexy geeky = yum.

BostonPobble said...

Akakarma ~ Oooo! Sam Elliot! Absolutely. :)

CrackerLilo ~ Has Sinead O'Conner's last hit really been 15 years ago???? Dude....And I'm gonna have to google Tony. I need to see what this man looks like.

Wolfgrrrl ~ Yep, gotta look at him differently. ;) And you are So On about the sexy geek thing! Yum.

CrackerLilo said...

Makes you feel old, don't it? I nearly slapped my 21-year-old SIL when she called Sinead's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" CD "classic."

Tony is not the handsomest of the drivers, but I think he's just downright adorable. If he likes guys, they'd like him at the bear bars. And of course, I get adjectives like "adorable" rather than "beautiful" or "gorgeous" myself. Some good photos from his recent trip to the Daytona Superspeedway here.

BostonPobble said...

CrackerLilo ~ Feel free to smack her for me as well. ;) And yep, he's pretty damn cute.
